Your friend is an idiot. Anemia is not being Bulimic or Anorexic. Anemia is a blood disorder cause by an iron deficiency. The iron deficiency could possibly be cause by either eating disorder, but is not always the case. Normal people get anemia too. Also, cutting is for pussies. If your gonna do it, do it right. eating disorders are psychological diseases, a lot like ocd and various forms of anxiety, so in many (if not all) ways they're /self induced/. sure, it's more often than not influenced by society, the media, peer pressure, but in essence it's something that takes place in /your/ mind and is therefore /self induced/.

aka, the simple fact of the matter is that they CAN 'eat a sandwich', but they WON'T. there's nothing phsyically hindering them to the point where they simply 'cannot' eat. so, as crudely put as the comment above is, it's right.
on the other hand, just because something is possible, that doesn't mean it's easy. technically you're right too, in equal crudeness.

speaking from the standpoint of someone who's struggled with eating disorders, in the end it all boils down to acceptance and will power.
you have to accept that there's something wrong with you, accept that you ARE capable of stopping, and you have to have the WILL to stop.

both sides of this argument annoy me because both sides hold equal ignorance and are still trying to scream that they're right (and in some very small sense they are), but actually they're both more wrong than anything.

anorexia is not a 'stupid disease' but neither is it something 'they just can't help'.
the first statement is so close minded, flippant, and detached that it makes me sick, and the second is nothing more than an over defensive excuse to justify a terrible way of life.
if people, victims and onlookers alike, would stop yelling mindlessly at each other for a moment, maybe they'd learn enough to stop having these mindsets.
maybe then much more could actually be DONE to FIX the problem.
awareness could be raised and people could help themselves and each other.

because that's what articles and pictures like these are really about.

I'ts got to a stange now where i cannot eat more than a few mouthfulls an hour otherwise i will throw it up because my stomach has shrunk so much. I love food and dont have a mental eating disorder.

At the time I took the pictures, I was very unwell- both physically and psychologically and had little insight into the damage that could come from sharing the images. I was a lonely and troubled young girl who was desperately seeking somewhere to belong... finding people online who I felt 'understood' my pain was all that I felt I had. In hindsight, I now realise that a lot of those people were full of sh*t.

I did have "real" anorexia. It was very real, stole years from my life and very nearly killed me on several occasions. It's very difficult to explain the mentality behind sharing those pictures. For once I had people telling me I was doing something right in my life, and as a very insecure young girl, it felt nice to have people tell me that I wasn't a complete failure.

Don't judge until you understand each and every person individually. Yes, some people are 'pro ana', but I always loathed that group of idiots. I've lost close friends to the disease and have been left with lifelong health implications because of it.

I would say that, were it not FOR the encouraging attitudes of the pro ana crap, the people who egged me on to lose weight in those early days, I probably never would have got as ill as I did.

Most are not pro-Ana, most would rather be normal, but they can't because it's how the control something in their life so they embrace it. I know plent of girls and guys who take photos "showing off" their bones because it makes them see and feel better knowing they are shrinking. It's a disease, and making them eat something will not automatically fix them. Most likely they either would purge or exercise to wear it off. These girls really are emtionally charged. Something had happened in their life, or they finally took control of something. It so happens, the one thing they can control is their intake of food. The less they eat the more people talk about it, thus liking the attention... they eat even less. Sometimes they worry about how many calories etc. are in the pills they take. They all need to see a phychologist, not a dietician. Its also very hard obsession to beat. Your brain had trained you to eat a certain way, thus you do. You need to talk, more than anything. Most people in the real world don't mock you for it either. I've been on the brink of anorexia, and no body laugh at me or mocked me. That wasn't the problem. They were all telling me I looked great. I think some of these girls actually look good. Not all of them, but some. I've now read the whole comment-conversation and it made me sick.

You may think that it's better to have some lovehandles and "curves" (fat), but those girls don't. They think it's better to have some bones and a flat belly rather than lovehandles and fat all over. Everybody has a right to choose for themselves what "beauty" means to them. I think skinny girls are hot and because I am fat ("normal", "goodlooking", whatever you'd like to call it. I'm a size 3) I choose not to wear bikinis. I envy normal girls (like myself) that actually think they look good and dare to wear bikinis to the beach even though there are no gap between their thights and their lovehandles are bulging out. The fact that you think a size 3 is fat tells me that while you may not actually be anorexic, you definitely have a body image issue. It's true that everyone has a right to live their life any way they choose, but much like obesity causes all kinds of physical problems, so does anorexia and bulimia. My mother used to be Anorexic, It's aweful that these girls do this to themselves but If all it would take was going to a shrink and eating a sandwich...well they would have done it a long time ago. They are battling their body's for control...some may not realise they are even doing it. for example ....My mother has a over active thyroid now and if she don't have the right dosage of Meds, she can't keep the food down and ends up losing weight. I lost a sister to this disease 8yrs ago she was under 80lbs. Now one of my younger sisters is also this way. she is 18 and weights 90lbs and she thinks she is fat. I pulled her out of a gym where she was at for 4hrs just this afternoon. She just put herself in a hospital to get help for the second time. So I know how hard it is for them to get back to what we see as normal. But some think nothing is wrong with them. I hope they can find help and slowly get healthy.

I'm trying to understand what causes anorexia. I know what it looks like, what damage it does, but will anyone help me to understand what causes it? One young lady said that someone told them once they needed to loss weight and that is what started their anorexia. I don't understand how that could be the case just because someone hurt their feelings at some time. Who hasn't had their feelings hurt about this, that, or the other? It must be something more than just that. I don't need to know what it does, or what it looks like, I need to know what causes it.
